📖 About the Comic
Back in 1976, I was in my first year of high school at the "Fernando de Peñalver" school in Caracas. It was common in those places to have a bulletin board filled with newspaper clippings and all kinds of news. Around that time, a teacher invited me to contribute some humorous material for the playground news board – and that was the first public appearance of "Tuk and his Dinosaur". I would publish it every week (or whenever I could), but seeing my classmates laugh and look forward to the next one… that is a feeling I will never forget! Over time, Tuk and his Dinosaur became the beloved comic strip of the entire student body; they were like friends who joined us during recess and brightened our day.
Years later, as an adult working as a commercial illustrator, in 1987 I managed to get my strip published daily in the Caracas press, from 1987 to 1989. Later on, between 2000 and 2002, Tuk returned in the digital age with a second series of daily strips on high-traffic websites and on his own official site back then, featuring brand new material.
"Tuk and his Dinosaur", along with the creations of other greats from that golden era, is part of the very soul of 1980s Venezuelan print comics. For me, it is much more than a strip: it is a piece of my youth, of shared laughter with my classmates, of creativity with every publication in Caracas. Thank you to everyone who loved it and continue to love it! It moves me to know that it still brings out smiles; that is why I bring you this website for both old and new readers of the strip.
Por allá, en el año 1976, yo cursaba mi primer año de ciclo básico en el liceo caraqueño de ciclo básico “Fernando de Peñalver”. Era costumbre, en esos lugares, tener una cartelera con recortes de noticias de prensa y toda clase de novedades. Por esos días, un profesor me invitó a aportar algún material de humor para la cartelera de noticias del patio de recreo: fue la primera aparición pública de “Tuk y su dinosaurio”. La publicaba cada semana (o cuando podía), pero ver a mis compañeros reírse y esperar la siguiente… ¡esa fue una satisfacción que no se olvida! Con el tiempo, Tuk y su dinosaurio se convirtió en la tira querida de todo el estudiantado; eran como amigos que nos acompañaban en los recreos y nos alegraban el día.
Años más tarde, ya adulto y trabajando como ilustrador publicitario, en 1987 logré que mi tira comenzara a publicarse diariamente en la prensa de Caracas, entre los años 1987 y 1989. Posteriormente, entre los años 2000 y 2002, Tuk regresó en la era digital con una segunda serie de tiras diarias en sitios de internet con mucho tráfico, y en su propio sitio oficial de aquella época, con nuevo material.
“Tuk y su dinosaurio”, junto a las creaciones de otros grandes de esa época dorada, forma parte del alma del cómic impreso venezolano de los ochenta. Para mí, es mucho más que una tira: es un pedacito de mi juventud, de risas compartidas con mis compañeros, de creatividad que en cada publicación en Caracas. ¡Gracias a todos los que la quisieron y la siguen queriendo! Me emociona saber que todavía saca sonrisas; por eso les traigo esta web para los antiguos y nuevos lectores de la tira.
